If you travel in Poland, it is safe to say that everywhere you go you will see waffles.

They are known as Goffry in Polish. You will note signs offering Goffry and Lody – waffles and ice cream.

This recipe is one that is generally made in the home because it uses yeast. Those that you find in the kiosks are usually made with baking powder. Those made with powder lend themselves more to massive production.

And that these waffles take a bit more time makes them somewhat unique and attractive because you don’t always get the real thing.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/3 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup lukewarm milk, plus
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons lukewarm milk
  • 1 packet dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 eggs
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 3/8 cups sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon instant malted milk powder

Directions

  1. Mix all ingredients together except for butter and sugar.
  2. Let stand for 30 minutes.
  3. Add butter and finish by adding sugar.
  4. Form balls (like a small apple) out of dough.
  5. Let stand for another 15 minutes.
  6. Preheat waffle maker.
  7. Place 1 doughball in the center.
  8. Close waffle maker.
  9. Cook 3 minutes.
  10. No need to grease waffle maker.
  11. Serve hot topped with your favorite fruit or syrup.
